In the Roman custom of adoption, the new father bought the son he wished to adopt. There was a commercial basis for the legal transaction of adoption – one which bought out all the debts and obligations of his or her old life – and the adoptee was in reality a new person with a new identity and a new life in the eyes of the law and society then. That’s the background to understanding what’s happened to the believer on the Lord Jesus.
